WALPOLE – In their final game of the preliminary round of New England Pro Am Hockey’s 2017 Sr. Chowder Cup, the Northern Wings (Black) made for a fine finish. They shutout Team CCM, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at Walpole’s Rodman Arena, finishing their opening round, Jr. A Division slate a perfect 3-0-0.
The stat sheet was quiet in the first aside from goaltenders Bryan O’Toole (Team CCM) and Doug Connor (Wings), who piled up the saves as the opening 25-mintues was played to a 0-0 draw. It was nearly a completely different game in the second half, however, as defense faded and slowly the offense grew throughout.
At one end of the ice, at least.
The first goal of the game came just over three minutes into the second half. Cam Barto with the tally. Mason Martin then doubled the lead about five minutes later at 7:56.
After the bitter shutdown in the first, the Wings offense was in sync in the second, popping off six times in the latter 25-minutes and nearly doubling their shot total in the process (13 in the first, to 22 in the second). Equally as impressive is all six Wings goals coming from a different skater; Barto and Martin joined in the scoring column by Will Robertson, Troy Crosson, Ethan Homitz and Matt Bloomer.
Bloomer (1G, 1A), Homitz (1G, 1A) and Joe Nutting (2A) finished as the game’s multipoint scores, while Justin Crawford took the net in the second half and finished off the shutout.
