WALPOLE – With teams jockeying for position in hopes of advancement at the 2016 Chowder Cup, the Northern Wings already knew where they stood entering their final game of the tournament’s preliminary round. That, however, did not stop them from ending on a high note, laying a 6-1 victory on Apple Core Saturday afternoon at Rodman Arena.
The Wings started their road to victory by amassing a two-goal lead on goals by Jordan Wright and Sean Gavin, both scores coming near the middle of the first half.
Apple put themselves in good position as the half neared its end, cutting their deficit to one on an AJ Weinum goal at 18:18. That deficit did not last long, however, as the Wings had one left in them before the break as well, William Baginski making it 3-1 at 20:30. There the score remained until the opening face-off of the second half.
The Wings offense then repeated their performance, posting another three goals in the second half to close out their 2016 Chowder Cup. Matt Bloomer’s second of the tournament and Cade Groton’s first made it 5-1 before Wright closed out what he started to polish off the 6-1 final.
Wright’s pair led all goal scorers in the contest, but Wings teammate Joe Nutting had the most entries on the score sheet, credited with three assists. Bloomer and Gavin – a goal and an assist each – were also credited with multi-point games.
